We began today at Mount Barker Community College where girls gave warm goodbyes to their homestay families. The area is rich with mountain ranges and sea, the fog just lifted as we arrived to Albany for whale-watching. The girls had an amazing time— they saw many whales, especially humpbacks, and even spotted a two-day old calf and its mom. The captain remarked that after 20+ years leading these tours that seeing a newborn remains a rare treasure. Watching the mother and calf swim together was a treat. Another fun moment was when a school of dolphins swam with our boat and the whales we followed (the girls have pictures to prove it!). The water is a beautiful light blue and seeing them glide along gracefully was just stunning.

After whale-watching, PG and GSG singers enjoyed a delicious lunch on the water and took a walk in the Albany sunshine. Shortly thereafter, they checked into their hostel for the night and prepared for their late afternoon concert at Wesley Church. A late Victorian church with Gothic elements, Wesley Church had a bright acoustic and welcoming audience. When it came time to sing our traditional Waltzing Matilda, the audience joined in gladly — they also enjoyed our Aboriginal songs and American favorites. At the end, PG and GSG Singers greeted audience members who expressed much gratitude. Girls reported audience members described having goosebumps and feeling uplifted by their singing. One audience member remarked he liked hearing our spoken accents and how incredible it is that when we sing, we all sound the same, whether Australian or American.

Back at the hostel, the girls enjoyed a homemade meal by the owner, Pip, who hails from Perth. We all finished the night with amazing homemade pavlova (we’ve already decided to make it once we return, we’re hooked!). A highlight to our day was Ella’s birthday—many impromptu Happy Birthday singings occurred sung throughout the day. We finished the evening with one final birthday sing and chocolate birthday cake.
